Solar Panel Maintenance in Las Vegas: What You Actually Need to Do

By Chris Collela·

One of the best things about solar panels is how little maintenance they need. But Las Vegas has unique conditions that deserve a few extra considerations.

The Dust Factor

Las Vegas is in the Mojave Desert. Dust, sand, and occasional construction debris settle on panels. The good news? Rain handles most of it. The bad news? We don't get much rain.

How much does dust affect output? Studies show dust accumulation in desert environments can reduce production by 5–15% between cleanings. For most homeowners, that's $10–$25/month in lost production.

How Often to Clean

I recommend cleaning your panels 2–3 times per year in Las Vegas:

  • Once in early spring (after winter dust buildup)
  • Once in early summer (before peak production season)
  • Once in fall (after monsoon season dust)
  • How to Clean Safely

  • Never use a pressure washer — it can damage panel seals
  • Use a soft brush or squeegee with a long handle
  • Clean in the early morning when panels are cool — cold water on hot glass can crack it
  • Plain water works fine. If panels are really dirty, add a tiny drop of dish soap
  • Or hire a professional cleaning service ($100–$200 for a typical residential system)
  • Monitoring Your System

Every modern solar system includes production monitoring through an app (Enphase, SolarEdge, etc.). Check it monthly. If you see a sudden drop in production that isn't weather-related, it could mean:

  • A panel issue
  • An inverter problem
  • Excessive shading from a new tree or structure
  • Inverter Replacement

Your panels will last 25+ years, but inverters typically last 12–15 years. Budget for one inverter replacement during your system's lifetime (~$1,500–$3,000 for string inverters, less if you have microinverters with 25-year warranties).

    Chris's Take

Don't overthink maintenance. A couple of cleanings a year and keeping an eye on your monitoring app is really all it takes. The desert sun does the heavy lifting.
