Is Battery Storage Worth It for Las Vegas Solar Homes?

By Chris Collela·

Battery storage is the hottest topic in solar right now, and for good reason. But is it right for your Las Vegas home? Let me give you the honest answer.

The Case for Batteries

Las Vegas is a unique solar market. Summer temperatures push AC systems hard, NV Energy uses time-of-use pricing, and power outages — while rare — do happen. Here's where batteries shine:

1. Time-of-Use Arbitrage

NV Energy charges more for electricity during peak hours (1 PM – 7 PM summer). Your solar panels produce the most energy midday, but you use the most in the evening when you get home. A battery lets you store that midday solar and use it during expensive evening hours instead of exporting it for a lower credit.

2. Backup Power

Las Vegas doesn't get hurricanes, but we do get extreme heat events. If the grid goes down during a 115-degree day, a battery keeps your AC running. That's not just convenience — it's safety.

3. The ITC Covers Batteries Too

The 30% Federal Tax Credit applies to battery storage when installed with solar. On a $12,000 battery system, that's $3,600 back.

The Case Against (For Some Homes)

Batteries aren't for everyone:

  • Cost: A quality battery system adds $10,000–$15,000 to your solar installation
  • Payback period: Without batteries, solar pays back in 5–7 years. With batteries, it's 8–12 years
  • If you're rarely home during peak hours, the arbitrage benefit is smaller
  • My Recommendation

For most Las Vegas homeowners, I recommend starting with solar only and adding batteries later if:

  • You work from home and want outage protection
  • You have an EV that charges in the evening
  • NV Energy's TOU spread widens (which it likely will)
  • The good news? Modern solar systems are battery-ready. You can add storage anytime without rewiring.

Want to know if batteries make sense for your specific situation? Let's talk numbers — I'll model both scenarios for you.
